Team Tutsham Academy - Equine Assisted Learning / Farm Intervention & Enviromental Intervention

The transition from disengaged child to adult - the transition from school to a college or workplace. With lack of direction, this is a challenging time and where we see vulnerable young people struggle to cope.

As a successful charity, working with vulnerable children, we have already helped many of them grow into prepared young adults. We have supported these young people to gain the skills they need to be able to apply for college, an apprenticeship or a job in a very competitive environment. With our help, our young people have been successful in gaining places at college to study Equestrian or Farming courses, they have got apprenticeships at Horse Racing Schools, got jobs as grooms and gone on to unrelated careers such as training with the police force.

We support:

NON EDUCATION ATTENDERS - Young people who struggle to access the school curriculum due to exclusion, failure to attend and long term sickness. This group need to learn work and social skills to enable them to continue into adulthood in a way they can financially support themselves.

CARE SYSTEM - Young people in foster care fall face a real challenge when they turn 18. No longer under the foster care system, they lose all the support they had through childhood. It is this window that we feel we can make a real difference. Working at the farm gives them some real work experience and a reference they can take with them.

SPECIAL NEEDS - Mental and Pysical. We see the difference that time in the fresh air, in a rural environment, with the quiet and ample space does for these young people. Interacting with the horses, you can see the connection immediately. This group particularly enjoy planting up flowers and veg in the Team Tutsham Garden.  We have supported these young people through ASD crisis and anxiety attacks.

We have had proven success with all these group’s which makes us unbelievably proud. An opportunity to not only learn about horse care, but social skills, team work, support applying for colleges/jobs, help writing CVs and interview practice.  We would partner with local business to give our Team Tutsham Academy "Graduates" the best chance of a place of work or work experience when they go on and leave us. There is an opportunity to earn qualifications with our accredited ASDAN courses. There are a maximum of 4 in a group and the session involves some horse riding/horse care, farm animal care, land based skills (inc tractor work) and some classroom learning.

Outcomes Measurement would be termly against specific objective and targets for each young person. After a joint discussion about the need, goals and ambitions of the individual, we ensure that we put bespoke programmes in place for each person. We have a tracker to monitor progress each term.

We have an experienced and passionate team who are dedicated to helping these young people make a real difference to their futures. They have backgrounds working with young offenders, probation service, prisons, secure hospitals, special needs schools, mainstream schools and school governance.
